Gooney Bird Greene is new at Watertower Elementary School.

She walks into the second grade classroom for the first time on a Wednesday morning in October and makes quite a splash! She walks right in and introduces herself, asks to sit right in the middle of the class, and and says she's just moved from China! Besides that, she's dressed so uniquely – her hair and her lunches are unique too.

When Mrs Pidgeon begins a class about how to make good stories, the whole class agrees...they want Gooney Bird Greene to tell them a story, the story of how she got her unusual name. Each morning Gooney Bird brings a new story to tell to her classmates in an interesting and entertaining way. And all of her stories are completely and totally true – like how she came from China on a flying carpet, how her cat was consumed by a cow, and how she was tardy one day because she had to direct a symphony orchestra! And those dangling diamond earrings! Where did those come from?

Finally, after several weeks, Gooney Bird runs out of stories.

Her classmates will have to take over the storytelling. Can Gooney Bird help each of her friends find the stories hidden inside them?

This heroine is refreshingly unique and so funny! Her stories are hilarious, and given with some good storytelling advice. The author has captured the spirit and character of a second grade classroom and I, for one, will be looking for the sequel. For those moms searching for a “first” chapter book that will keep your little's attention and not add any potty humor to their repertoire, this series should fit the bill!

Content Considerations

Some may think that Gooney Bird Greene crosses over to “bossy” on occasion
